What is HAPPEN?

HAPPEN exists to bring the benefits of the arts to local communities. Over the years we have delivered a number of projects across Bedfordshire that have explored the use of the arts in addressing social and economic objectives. Our specialism now is in working with local residents to deliver high-quality public art projects, particularly in new communities.

HAPPEN is hosted by Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity, the leading charity working with communities across Bedfordshire. It was set up in 2005 with funding from Arts Council England and Bedfordshire’s local authorities.

Taylor Wimpey, Martin Grant Homes have appointed HAPPEN to manage and implement an ambitious Public Art programme at the King’s Reach development, Biggleswade.  The programme will deliver a number of principal artworks, with linked multiple satellite pieces by three individual artists; integrated as far as possible with the overall design of the public realm.

There are three commission themes:

‘Music of the Spheres’ ~ Navigation (learn more)
‘Growing communities’ ~ Market Gardening (learn more)
‘Buried treasure’ ~ Discovery (learn more)

The role of HAPPEN?

HAPPEN has developed a Public Art Commissioning Framework for Kings Reach, which outlines the wider Public Art programme for this development, including guiding principles, suitable sites and opportunities, and the practicalities of delivery.
